With enrollment growth across all areas of Arlington County, the existing stock of elementary and middle school buildings was being pushed significantly beyond capacity. Arlington Public Schools has repeatedly turned to VMDO for help in evaluating its options.
In addition to the three feasibility studies that advanced into projects, VMDO has conducted studies on eight additional sites.
In addition to looking at ways to increase student capacity, each study:
Evaluated the existing site and building infrastructure; Identified deficiencies in building envelopes and systems; Examined capacity of core spaces: gym, kitchen, cafeteria, library, bathrooms Identified energy saving opportunities; Identified and proposed solutions to site circulation, traffic, parking and pedestrians safety issues; Provided detailed conceptual level cost estimates for all work.
