John shapes complex civic and institutional projects with the originality of an artist and the patient focus of a dedicated craftsman. A member of the higher education studio, he has produced award-winning designs with a unique approach that marries his painting practice and love of landscape with architectural form-making. He energizes project teams with his passion for design and his commitment to clear, inclusive communication. In 2019 he pursued an independent research and travel fellowship on library design in Finland, sponsored by VMDO. This experience shaped his current trajectory as a designer of thoughtful and innovative public libraries.

John has experience as a designer of educational projects for public and private institutions in VA, NY, and FL at all scales and phases of development. With his public library design work, he has partnered with communities to imagine and deliver buildings that promote learning and support healthy civic life. He is proud to be the project architect for VMDO’s first public library, New City Library, New City, NY, which will be completed in 2023.

John earned a BA in Architecture with a minor in Painting from Washington University in St. Louis. In 2015, he graduated with an M. Architecture from the University of Virginia. During his academic career, John pursued opportunities to study the intersections between architecture and painting, and the myriad ways they inspire and support one another. At UVA, he completed a landscape painting independent study with Professor Sanda Iliescu that focused on abstraction as a tool for connecting more deeply with place.
